Queen appoint Cabinet over Zoom as mobility issues prevent return to London

The Queen will make Royal history by allowing the new Cabinet to swear their oaths over video link for the first time.

Mobility issues mean the 96 year old monarch cannot return to London to see out Boris Johnson and see in his replacement.

So Mr Johnson will fly to Balmoral on Tuesday to formally hand over power to his successor.

If that’s Liz Truss there will be no kissing of hands just a curtsy. And if Rishi Sunak a handshake.

New ministers normally go to Buckingham Palace to collect their seals of office at a meeting of the Privy Council called for the purpose.

Liz Truss is expected to be named Prime Minister on Monday (Empics Entertainment)

But on Wednesday afternoon they will gather for a special Cobra meeting in the Cabinet Office instead.

The Queen will watch as the Cabinet take their oaths and the new chief whip hands over the seals of office as Lord President of the Council.

First to swear an oath will be the new PM in the official title of First Lord of the Treasury.
