A Queanbeyan man was caught driving 58km/h over the speed limit on the Kings Highway in Braidwood with his wife and children in the car.

Officers from NSW Police's traffic and highway patrol command allegedly detected a black Ford Mustang driving 158km/h in a 100km/h zone at 4.40pm on Tuesday, December 19.

The 31-year-old driver was stopped by police, and was fined $2520 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

The driver received 12 demerit points, as part of the double demerit period.

His license was suspended for six months.

Police have seized the vehicle which will remain in a storage yard for the statutory period of three months.

Monaro Police District reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits in a statement on Facebook.

"As can be seen in this instance, there are quite severe consequences for drivers placing other road users in danger through their risky driving behaviors on our roads," the statement read.
