Quarterbacks not a bright spot at Seahawks rookie minicamp

Although it’s certainly not their highest priority, the Seattle Seahawks are looking for a third string quarterback to bring into training camp. That player will push veteran Paxton Lynch for the backup job, likely ending up on the practice squad as injury insurance.

Seattle had three quarterbacks in rookie minicamp over the weekend, each competing for that role. However, coach Pete Carroll was not impressed with their performances.

“I thought the quarterbacks had a hard time,” Carroll stated after camp on Sunday. “I thought they struggled with the system and the play calling. A lot of guys calling plays for the first time, in the huddles for the first time, under center for the first time, so there were some brand new experiences and so they were competing on many levels just to get going. So we’ll take a look at the film now that we get out of camp, and see where it all fits.”

The three quarterbacks at minicamp included former University of Washington and University of Utah quarterback Troy Williams, South Dakota State’s Taryn Christion and British Columbia’s Michael O’Connor.

Christion is the only one of the three who Seattle signed, but he struggled to find receivers during the scrimmage drills throughout the weekend, and didn’t appear comfortable with the playbook.

Williams looked the best of the three, although he struggled on the final day as well.

The Seahawks will have a third quarterback on their roster during training camp. However, they could find their practice squad quarterback elsewhere when roster cuts happen in early September, especially if they don’t find anyone they like over the summer.
