Quarterback Geno Smith to visit Seahawks on Wednesday

The Seattle Seahawks continue to browse the open market, looking for possible free-agents fits now that the deadline has passed for signings to impact the compensatory pick formula.

Seattle signed a number of veterans last week, including defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, whose one-year contract became official on Friday. The Seahawks appear to now be turning their attention to the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Geno Smith will be making the trip to Seattle on Wednesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who confirmed the team’s interest as initially reported by ESPN’s Giants reporter, Jordan Rannan.

Rannan tweeted Smith is expected to sign with the Seahawks.

The Seahawks signed Paxton Lynch to the roster in January to compete to back up starter quarterback Russell Wilson this season. Seattle also vetted three quarterbacks during the club’s rookie minicamp but coach Pete Carroll wasn’t pleased with what he saw.

“I thought the quarterbacks had a hard time,” Carroll after camp broke. “I thought they struggled with the system and the play calling. A lot of guys calling plays for the first time, in the huddles for the first time, under center for the first time, so there were some brand new experiences and so they were competing on many levels just to get going.

“So we’ll take a look at the film now that we get out of camp, and see where it all fits.”

Smith was originally selected by the Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft and spent four years with the team before signing with the Giants in 2017. He played in five games for the Chargers last season.
