Nicola Sturgeon's quarantine warning as she urges Scots 'not to book foreign holidays'

Nicola Sturgeon said she would not book a foreign holiday right now as concerns grow for a spike in Covid-19 and fast-changing quarantine rules.

The First Minister said there are outbreaks in popular destinations for Scots, including Spain which was taken off the "safe" list for travel after just a few days last week.

The change caused a backlash from holidaymakers, Spanish leaders and the travel industry.

But at her regular briefing in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said no one should assume health restrictions will stay the same for any length of time.

Sturgeon said: "I take no pleasure in saying this because of the impact on individuals and industries that are very important to Scotland - but right now be very, very cautious about booking foreign travel that is not essential.

"You don't know that if you're in a country they may change their regulations and you might find yourself restricted in that country, and then when you come home you might find that the quarantine rules have changed here.

"Unfortunately that's the nature of what we're dealing with right now, so I want to be really blunt and really clear with people.

"If you were asking me, I wouldn't be booking a foreign holiday right now because of these reasons. I would be choosing, if I had the time to go on holiday, I'd be choosing to spend it here in Scotland."

Earlier, Boris Johnson raised his concerns for a “second wave” of coronavirus across continental Europe.

The Prime Minister signalled, like Sturgeon, he will extend quarantine to other countries if needed. But he stopped short of saying British families should not go abroad at all.

He said: “Obviously these are decisions for families, for individuals, about where they want to go.”

He added: “Clearly we now face, I’m afraid, the threat of a second wave in other parts of Europe and we just have to be vigilant and we have to be very mindful.”

“I’m afraid you are starting to see in some places the signs of a second wave of the pandemic.

“And we all remember what happened last time. It’s absolutely vital therefore that we make the necessary preparations here in the UK as we are doing.”

The Spanish quarantine rules are to be reviewed on Friday and the PM did not rule out reports that the 14-day isolation rule could be reduced to 10 days if people obtain a negative Covid-19 test. His government colleague Michael Gove earlier dismissed it as "speculation".

From today, there are no quarantine restrictions for people coming to the UK from Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
