Quarantine rules are being lifted for Renfrewshire school kids

Renfrewshire pupils will no longer be forced to self isolate if named a close contact of someone with Covid-19 in school.

For the first time in a year, young people identified as a close contact will be allowed to continue attending school as long as they return a negative PCR test and continue to remain symptom free.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

A landmark moment for Renfrewshire school children, thousands of students were asked to quarantine for 10 days in the 2020/21 school year - many on multiple occasions.

Figures revealed by the Express earlier this year showed that Renfrewshire pupils were particularly badly hit by the pandemic.

The local authority area was one of only three in Scotland which had at least 50 per cent of its schools have one or more pupil test positive for the virus.

In term one alone, 80 per cent of schools were forced to ask youngsters to isolate after positive cases were identified on campus.

A spokeswoman for Renfrewshire Council said: “we hope these new measures will mean less staff and pupils having to self-isolate and if they do, it will be for much shorter periods of time.

“If your child does develop symptoms of coronavirus and tests positive, please inform their school or nursery when reporting absences.”

Staff who are double vaccinated and have a negative result from a PCR test will also no longer have to isolate if they are a contact of a positive case.

Children attending nursery in the under five age group will not be required to undergo a PCR test but should be closely monitored to ensure they remain symptom free.

Bubbles in classrooms will no longer be required and children will not be asked to maintain physical distancing when on campus. Staff and parents attending the school at drop off and pick up times will however be asked to keep one metre apart.

Young people attending high school will be required to continue wearing face masks during lessons and the continued use of twice weekly at home testing kits is still encouraged.

Drama, music, physical education and dance are now able to take place indoors with good ventilation and enhanced hygiene measures in place.

The Scottish Government will review all school and nursery coronavirus safety measures after the first six weeks of term, around the end of September.
