Quarantine-free travel to be announced for double-jabbed Brits

The government is set to announce the start of quarantine free travel for all those who have been double vaccinated.

Boris Johnson is set to sign off on an agreement that would see holidaymakers with full Covid-19 vaccinations and children be allowed to travel to amber list countries from July 19 without the need for a 10 day self-isolation period on their return.

Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, is set to announce the plans today.

Plans are also expected to include the need to take a PCR test upon return to the UK, which is also a current necessity for travel to green list destinations.

This week the Prime Minister said: “We will maintain our tough border controls including the red list, and recognising the protection afforded by doses of vaccine, we will work with the travel industry towards removing the need for fully vaccinated arrivals to isolate on return from an amber country.”

The move would effectively make all amber countries green for all those who are fully vaccinated and open up quarantine-free travel to most destinations across Europe and the United States of America.

However, some countries are applying their own quarantine rules for UK travellers.

The news follows announcements by airlines that they will be trialling a new vaccine passport system, in which passengers will have to provide proof of both jabs.

John Holland-Kaye, chief executive of Heathrow Airport, told the BBC's Today programme: "At the moment the main barrier to people who have been doubly vaccinated travelling being allowed to do that, is being able to demonstrate to the government that we can check that they've had the vaccination already.

"The trial that we're starting later this week will allow us to demonstrate we can do that safely with 100% checks on double vaccination before people get on the plane."

Around two thirds of UK adults are now fully vaccinated against Covid.
