Quality Street tins shrink as one type of sweet is removed

The size of Quality Street tins will shrink this Christmas as Nestle takes away one type of sweet and increases the amount of chocolate in each selection.

The standard tin size is set to shrink again - this time from 720g to 650g - and the mix of sweets inside will also be different as one favourite is ditched.

Last year's 720g tin had more toffee in than you will find in this year's selection, according to The Guardian .

If the 650g tub is just too small, you will also be able to buy a more expensive 1kg tin, a special 800g gold tin at Tesco and Costco will stock a 2kg tin.

Ellie Worley, Quality Street’s senior brand manager, said: “2019 is a huge year for Quality Street. We’ve got a new sweet, a new (packaging) design and are developing the brand ahead of the Christmas season.

“As ever, we have Quality Street available in lots of different formats, shapes and sizes this year including the 650g tub and much larger tins for those who want even more to share with friends and family.”

Nestle is producing 12million chocolates a day at its factory in Halifax in the run-up to Christmas, packing 85 tins a minute.

But the tins won't include the toffee deluxe, instead being packed with more chocolate.

Chocolates will now make up 46 per cent of the mix - instead of 35 per cent.

For those who don't like the new ratio, the pick n mix option introduced at branches of John Lewis last year - where you can fill your own tin with your own choice of sweets - will be expanded to more store this year.

Nestle has installed seven new state-of-the-art wrapping machines which are twice as fast as the old ones, wrapping up to 750 chocolates per minute.
