Quality cycling and walking routes 'crucial' in Covid world says Dublin Mayor after massive funding boost for pedestrian and cycling projects

The Mayor of Fingal County believes that developing quality cycling and walking routes is "crucial" after a massive funding boost for pedestrian and cycling projects was announced yesterday.

Fingal County Council will take home a €15m slice of the massive €240m pie announced yesterday by the National Transport Authority.

And that money will be going straight into a number of sustainable transport projects across the county, such as the Royal Canal Cycle Route, Harry Reynolds Road Cycle Track, Donabate Estuary walking and cycling route and the Broadmeadow Way.

Fingal Mayor David Healy welcomed the announcement, saying that it is especially key in Covid times to be investing in infrastructure that will allow people to get out and about.

Cllr Healy said: “This is wonderful news.

"We are seeing many more people in Fingal walking and cycling due to the pandemic, so it is crucial that we develop quality routes for walking and cycling to allow greater movement within our communities.

"These projects will improve safety for people walking and cycling through the provision of segregated facilities either on-road or off-road.

"The walking and cycling projects that will benefit from this funding will help Fingal to achieve our Climate Action targets.

"However, the biggest benefit will be to public health from the combination of reduced air pollution exposure and increased physical activity."

South Dublin County Council's massive greenway project has been given a €7m cash injection as part of a new walking and cycling funding boost.

The Dodder Greenway will go from the quays up to Bohernabreena Reservoir, linking the city centre and the Grand Canal with Ballsbridge, Milltown, Rathfarnham, Firhouse and Tallaght, all the way to the Dublin Mountains.

The new cycle track and pedestrian walkway is around 15km long and will include public spaces along the route.

SDCC have already completed the major work of the first two stages of the project, installing three new pedestrian bridges along the route in Firhouse, Templeogue, and Bushy Park in Rathfarnham, as well as significant upgrade work in Kiltipper Park in Tallaght.

And the next stages will mainly involve connecting the pathways to and from different parks and improvements to the existing road and cycling infrastructure.

The Clontarf to City Centre cycling route in North Dublin has also received a €6m boost as part of the €240m National Transport Authority package to county councils announced today.

Dublin City Council in total will receive €49,875,000, South Dublin County Council will get €20,705,000, Fingal County Council will receive €14,870,000, and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council are set for €34,145,000.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said: “Today’s allocation increase marks a huge step forward in providing green sustainable mobility options to our cities, suburbs and hinterlands.

“During COVID we’ve reconnected with our local areas and can all see why and where improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure are needed.

“The projects that the NTA are funding will make a real difference to commuters and leisure seekers alike. Improving infrastructure for cycling and walking will make our cities, towns and villages more accessible and attractive for everyone. That’s good news for communities, and good news for the economy.

“I look forward to seeing and hopefully using the different projects that will be progressing in the months and years to come.”
