Now, Hayakita Elementary School in the town has been receiving "smiles" from all over the world.
In November, the school's 26 sixth-grade students started taking pictures of town residents' smiles as part of their classes. Since the activity became widely known via social media, more than 6,000 photos of smiling faces have been sent to the school by Tuesday.
They are not just from Japan, but also from the United States and other countries around the world including in Asia and Africa. The school received 150 photos from Peru, the school's teacher said.
