Quadrantids: How to see one of the best meteor showers of 2022 tonight

Stargazers are in for a treat tonight as the first meteor shower of 2022 reaches its peak.

The Quadrantids are considered to be one of the best astronomical spectacles of the year, with between 60 and 200 meteors visible per hour under perfect conditions, according to NASA.

The shower is expected to reach its peak between 9pm and 10pm today, January 3.

It is known for its bright "fireball" meteors – large explosions of light and colour that can persist longer than an average meteor streak.

The Quadrantids appear when the Earth moves through debris left from the asteroid 2003 EH1, between December 28 and January 12 each year.

The meteors move at a velocity of 25.5 miles (41km) per second.

They are best viewed in the northern hemisphere, looking north-east towards the Bootes constellation.

For the best chance of seeing as many meteors as possible, try and find somewhere with little light pollution.

Allow your eyes around 30 minutes to adjust to the night sky.

Latest Met Office forecasts suggest cloud cover may be an issue for viewing the Quadrantids in the south of England.

The best locations appear to be the Midlands, west Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Quadrantids were first observed in 1825.
