Quadrantid meteor shower: Stunning images show the first major meteor shower of 2019

These are the first images of the Quadrantid meteor shower, the first major meteor shower of 2019.

Images taken in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province show the stunning objects filling the night sky on January 3.

According to NASA, the Quandrantids are the best annual meteor showers.

It says: “During its peak, 60 to as many as 200 Quandrantid meteors can be seen per hour under perfect conditions.”

While most meteor showers peak for around two days, the Quandrantids peak for a few hours.

It is most visible to people in the northern hemisphere.

In the UK, the showers were visible during the Thursday evening and the early hours of Friday morning.

According to Space.com, the Quandrantids are associated with asteroid 2003 EH1 which is thought to be an extinct comet.

NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke said: "It was either a piece of a comet or a comet itself, and then it became extinct."

The first observations of the Quandrantid showers were in Europe around the 1820s and 1830s.
