QPR v Swansea City Championship fixture 'highly doubtful' as boss gives Covid update

QPR boss Mark Warburton says it is "highly doubtful" that Swansea City's Championship clash with Queens Park Rangers will take place this weekend.

The Swans are due to travel to the English capital on Saturday to face QPR at The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

However, the fixture was plunged into serious doubt after the Hoops returned a number of positive Covid-19 tests at the weekend which led to their league clash with Sheffield United, scheduled for Monday night, being postponed.

And speaking live on radio just five days before his side's game with Swansea, QPR boss Warburton revealed he did not expect Saturday's fixture in London to go ahead.

"It's difficult to be fair," he said on TalkSPORT.

"We had our round of testing and were preparing for our trip to Sheffield. We had four people come down positive with Covid and we’ve had two more overnight displaying symptoms.

"We have some unvaccinated players who have come into close contact as well. I’ve now got 10 isolating. That's a very difficult situation.

"As a group, we agonised over the decision [to call off Sheffield United game]. We had to do the right thing.

"You've got players who are deeply frustrated and confused by the situation, but you've got to observe the government's guidelines.

"Just being honest with you, I've got 10 players isolating. From a manager's perspective, Swansea looks highly doubtful because, to have so many now not returning until the week starting the 20th, they won't return to training until the 21st, 22nd or 23rd of December.

"So in my mind, and I know people above my pay grade will make the decision, Bournemouth is the next game we've got to focus on.

"Football has its obligation to do what it can. Hopefully we can lead from the front and set the right example. I'm convinced we've made the right decision."

QPR were due to face Sheffield United on Monday, December 13, although that fixture will now be rearranged.

Should their clash with Swansea for Saturday, December 18, be postponed, Russell Martin's men will not return to action until facing Millwall at The Den on December 26.

In a statement published on Sunday, QPR said: "Monday's Sky Bet Championship fixture between Sheffield United and QPR has been postponed.

"QPR have informed the EFL that, following several positive Covid-19 tests among our players and staff, we have insufficient numbers to fulfil the fixture.

"The circumstances surrounding the postponement will now be the subject of an investigation in accordance with EFL regulations. A rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will update supporters with further information as soon as it is available."

The EFL added: "In accordance with EFL regulations, the league will now review the circumstances surrounding the postponement with a rearranged date for the fixture to be confirmed in due course."
