QPR hold talks with Michael Appleton as they explore alternatives to Tim Sherwood

QPR have held talks with ex-Oxford United manager Michael Appleton as they consider alternative options to Tim Sherwood.

Sherwood remains the favourite to succeed Steve McClaren but Appleton is high on Rangers’ shortlist to take over at Loftus Road.

Appleton, 43, is also known as an excellent coach and worked at Leicester under Craig Shakespeare and then Claude Puel.

He has also had time as manager at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn but he built his reputation at Oxford United, where he guided them to promotion in League Two in 2016.

QPR's director of football Les Ferdinand and chief executive Lee Hoos have drawn up a shortlist which also features Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth, Charlton boss Lee Bowyer and Rui Almeida, who is in charge of French club Troyes.

Rangers do not want to rush an appointment but they are in danger of relegation from the Championship. QPR are just five point above the relegation zone with six matches remaining but they could get dragged deeper into trouble if they lose against Millwall tomorrow.

Caretaker John Eustace will remain in charge for the game at the Den. QPR then face Swansea City at Loftus Road on Saturday.
