QPR confirm first summer signing as Paul Smyth rejoins on free transfer from Leyton Orient

QPR have confirmed that Paul Smyth has returned to the club on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old left QPR in the summer of 2021 to join Leyton Orient, with the forward spending two season at Brisbane Road and helping them secure promotion to League One.

Smyth has now signed a three-year contract at QPR to become the Championship side’s first signing of the summer, leaving Orient as a free agent at the end of his deal.

“It’s brilliant to be back and I can’t wait to get started,” Smyth told QPR’s official website.

“It genuinely feels like I have been out on loan for two years! I had a brilliant season with Leyton Orient and the interest was there with QPR and I just had to get it done. I want to give it a chance again in the Championship. I couldn’t turn it down.

“I have been here before, I know what it’s like and I have a point to prove to myself. I want this. I want to show what I can do.”

Smyth already has experience of playing under QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth, with the pair working together during the 2019/20 season when the striker was on loan at Wycombe Wanderers.

Orient now have another void to fill as they prepare for life in League One, after it was announced on Tuesday that goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux would also be leaving the club. He has joined Premier League side Burnley.
