QLD Woman Left ‘Panicking’ After Finding A Battery In Her Guzman Y Gomez Meal

A Queensland woman has had the shock of her life after she discovered a battery in her Guzman y Gomez burrito bowl.

Last Friday, Stephanie Weston and her partner were sent into a panic after they found a small circular battery in her beef mince burrito bowl, which came from a Guzman y Gomez restaurant in Ripley, ABC News reports.

According to the publication, Weston’s partner drove to the Ripley chain and ordered a chicken burrito and a beef burrito bowl through the store’s drive-though. Weston said her partner ate his chicken burrito on the way home before she was handed her bowl.

It wasn’t until after a couple of bites that Weston spotted the small battery.

“We both started panicking,” Weston told the publication, before sharing that the battle was “quite corroded” which led to concerns that “it had been leaking” into the meal.

Following the frightening discovery, the couple contacted the Posions Information Hotline, who’d advised them to go to the hospital if they couldn’t determine the source of the battery.

Weston’s partner then returned to the Ripley store, where the assistant manager claimed the battery came from a thermometer. In compensation, the manager offered the pair a full refund and two burrito vouchers. However, no further information on whether other batteries had been found in their food was provided.

“They didn’t get his name or anything, no details, and didn’t tell us to go to the hospital,” Weston said, adding that the assistant manager didn’t show them the thermometer.

Following the incident, Steph took to a Ripley Facebook Community Group, sharing a photo of the battery in the bowl.

“Well I’m not eating Guzman y Gomez Ripley again, I found a battery in my burrito bowl and they think voucher makes up for almost posioning myself,” she penned.

Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV, a Guzman y Gomez spokesperson confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the incident and has contacted the “guest who was involved”.

“We are aware of a photo displaying a foreign object in a meal from our Ripley restaurant that has been shared online,” the spokesperson began.

“GYG immediately initiated a full investigation into this matter and confirmed that the object came from a food-grade thermometer. This is an isolated incident, there is no alert or recall that is required on this matter.

“We have undertaken urgent actions to ensure that this does not happen again, which includes the replacement of this model of thermometer, training of crew and additional checks of our equipment across all our restaurants. Food safety is our absolute priority at GYG, and we take incidents of this nature extremely seriously.”

Small circular batteries, like the found in Weston’s burrito bowl, can contain chemicals that can cause serious internal burns and bleeding.

Weston said she was “lucky” the batter was in her bowl as it was easier to find. She also said she was planning to share the meal with her step children.
