Police say the 39-year-old Laidley woman attacked the man at a property in Grantham, near Toowoomba, about 4.15am on Friday.

It is also alleged the woman killed a cat that lived at the house prior to the assault.

The 50-year-old Grantham man, who was known to the woman, was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition.

The woman was charged with attempted murder, entering a dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence, serious animal cruelty, and possession of a knife.
