Qld to tighten parole laws for killers

Queensland will tighten parole laws for convicted child and serial killers serving life sentences. (AAP)

Convicted child murders and serial killers serving life sentences in Queensland will never get parole if the state government gets its way.

Tougher parole laws for these groups are now being considered by the state's parliament.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says under the proposed changes tabled on Thursday, the balance will be tipped in favour of keeping offenders locked up for longer, by creating a presumption against parole.

"They are aimed at keeping the Queensland community safe and those who have committed the most evil of crimes in custody for longer," Ms Palaszczuk told parliament.

"They are aimed at ensuring victims and their loved ones do not need to experience the trauma of parole being considered every 12 months."

The Parole Board of Queensland present will be able to make a declaration blocking any prisoner in those categories from obtaining parole for up to 10 years.

And there will be no limit on the number of declarations that can be issued.

This means a further declaration could be issued for up to another 10 years at the expiry of the previous declaration.

Police Minister Mark Ryan says the new laws will be the toughest in Australia.
