Car owners who have failed to replace potentially deadly Takata airbags will be forced off the road from next month when the Queensland government cancels their registrations.
The government is writing to about 3000 owners warning cars that have not been repaired will be deregistered from next month.
The airbags sparked the largest automotive recall the world has ever seen after a spate of deaths caused by bags misfiring and sending metal fragments flying through vehicle cabins.
Three people have died in Australia and three others have been injured.
"Vehicles owners who have so far failed to replace defective airbags have already been sent a courtesy letter and, if they do not have the airbag replaced, their registration will be cancelled next month," Transport Minister Mark Bailey said on Friday.
"You are not only putting your own life at risk, but you are also risking the lives of any passengers in your vehicle if you continue to drive with faulty airbags."
