Qld sonographer in court over sex assaults

A Brisbane sonographer accused of sexually assaulting three patients during examinations has been released on bail.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court for the first time on Tuesday.

The 58-year-old is charged with three counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

The offences related to his examination of three women at the PA Hospital on Brisbane's southside between August 2018 and June 2020.

Police said earlier the women complained his conduct was outside the parameters of normal scan procedures.

The court heard the man has no criminal history and was a registered nurse who has worked in the Queensland health system for 30 years.

Prosecutor Stephenie Randolph opposed his bail saying the evidence was strong and the man was in a position of trust when he committed the alleged offences.

But defence lawyer Glen Cranny said his client denied the allegations.

"He instructs that he was always conducting his duties within the health industry in a manner consistent with his training and skill," Mr Cranny added.

After his arrest on Monday officers appealed for witnesses or any other potential victims to come forward.

The man has not worked at the hospital since June 2020, with the court being told he had effectively retired and is no longer registered as a health practitioner.

The man is due to have his case mentioned again in the same court on October 12.
