Sir Llew Edwards, a former Queensland government minister described as a "calm and reasonable voice" during the tumultuous years of Bjelke-Petersen era, has died aged 85.
The former state Liberal leader served as health minister, treasurer and deputy premier over an 11-year parliamentary career from 1972 to 1983.
"During those often tumultuous years, he was a calm and reasonable voice," Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told parliament on Wednesday.
"He was a dignified figure amid the noise and extremes of the more outlandish personalities who inhabited politics at that time."
"Sir Llew" was then appointed chairman of World Expo 88, an event the premier described as "one of the greatest" in Queensland history.
"An event which helped define our sense of what we can and should achieve as Queenslanders," she said.
He was also instrumental in the creation of Brisbane's Southbank precinct and left a lasting impression on the state's health system, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said in a statement on Wednesday.
"His vision in delivering a modern health service for Queensland will never be forgotten," he said.
"My condolences go to his wife Lady Jane Edwards AM."
