A woman has died in custody at a jail in north Queensland.

The 44-year-old died at Townsville Women's Correctional Centre on Tuesday evening, Queensland Corrective Services said.

"QCS is assisting local police who are investigating the circumstances of her death with the Corrective Services Investigations Unit," it said on Wednesday.

The state coroner has been informed.

"Our condolences go to the woman's family and friends," QCS said.

The women's facility, about 12km from Townsville, holds high- and low-security females prisoners and has a special unit for mothers and babies.

No further details were immediately available.
