Police have not given up hope of finding alive three men who went missing along with their boat three days ago in far north Queensland.

The men - aged 18, 27 and 37, were due to return from an offshore fishing trip to Yarrabah, near Cairns, on Tuesday afternoon, but they never arrived.

Police say the trio were last seen about 8.30am that day appearing to have engine trouble near Green Island, but they haven't been seen since.

Boats and planes have been searching for the men across a 1700 square nautical mile area between Little Fitzroy Island and Cape Tribulation.

"Police remain focused on an air and surface search and rescue mission pending further information and updates," a police statement said.

"Police are providing constant updates to the families and are providing support to the Yarrabah community."
