Queensland's opposition has questioned the conduct of a government MP who was knocked out while celebrating his birthday at a Townsville nightclub.

Labor MP Les Walker was hit during an alleged fight the Mad Cow Tavern about 1am on Saturday morning.

Mr Walker was taken to hospital and police are investigating.

Opposition police spokesman Dale Last questioned Mr Walker's behaviour.

"Can I quote (NRL coach) Wayne Bennett who said, very famously, that nothing good comes from being out after 1am in the morning?" he told reporters.

"When one of our local MPs is out at a nightclub at that time of the night, and we've now seen this incident unfold, which requires hospitalisation, that is concerning, but look let's wait to see what the police investigation reveals.

"As a member of parliament there's an expectation, a very clear expectation from the community about the standards of behaviour, about how you should conduct yourself in public."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk wouldn't comment about the incident.

"Yes, I have spoken to Les, and he's recovering well, but there is a police investigation that's ongoing so I won't be making any further comment," Ms Palaszczuk told reporters.
