A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for his involvement in stabbing a police dog in the chest.

Kieran David Rocke ran from police after he and a friend were found with a stolen utility in Brisbane's Gordon Park suburb in February last year.

Officers and police dog Kaos tracked the 22-year-old and his friend, finding the pair about 15 minutes later.

The other man stabbed Kaos in the chest while the dog was biting the pair, a Brisbane court was told on Thursday.

Rocke pleaded guilty to wounding the dog, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and a raft of other charges.

Prosecutor Hamish McIntyre said Rocke's liability in injuring Kaos was significantly less than his co-offender, who is yet to be dealt with in court.

But Rocke knew his friend was carrying the knife.

"You are a party to your co-offender's act because it was a probable consequence of failing to stop as directed by the police," Brisbane District Court Judge Tony Moynihan said in sentencing Rocke.

His "serious offending" also included driving dangerously in a police chase during which he drove through red lights at excessive speed before crashing into a bridge.

Defence barrister Ambyr Cousen said Rocke had a difficult childhood and had struggled with substance abuse issues since he was 11 years old.

"He was and remains, in my submission, a very young man who did have drug issues who is trying very hard to address that," Ms Cousen told the court.

Kaos made a full recovery, returning to work after the stabbing.

Judge Moynihan sentenced Rocke to a head sentence of 18 months in jail, while ordering his parole release date be set at May 17.
