A man has been charged with 34 offences for allegedly grooming girls online after local community members tipped off police in central Queensland.

The 21-year-old man was arrested at Woorabinda, near Rockhampton, on Friday.

Police allege he contacted multiple girls, some as young as 10 years old, on social media and engaged with them inappropriately.

He's been charged with offences including possessing child exploitation material, grooming, distributing child exploitation material and using a carriage service to access child abuse material.

The man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Rockhampton Magistrates Court on November 17.

Acting Sergeant Jordan Singleton said local community members had reported the man's alleged crimes to detectives.

"Due to the distressing nature of these offences, it is not often spoken of in society," he said in a statement on Friday.

"By being informed, having open discussions and reporting concerns to police in relation to online child exploitation the community can assist in the protection of children, victim support and making it more difficult for offenders to hide."
