A Gold Coast man has been charged after a ladder allegedly fell off his ute causing a crash which killed a motorcyclist.

The 40-year-old was driving his Mitsubishi ute on the Pacific Motorway on the morning on November 2 at Nerang when the crash occurred.

Police allege a ladder fell into the path of a 53-year-old motorcyclist who was riding behind.

The rider tried to swerve to avoid the ladder but was struck by another vehicle.

The motorcyclist was fatally injured and died at the scene.

The crash resulted in hours of heavy gridlock on the motorway that morning.

The alleged ute driver was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on May 5.
