An elderly pedestrian has allegedly been beaten to death with a metal pole in a random rampage that injured two others and shocked a regional community.
Richard Zoltan Babos, 36, has been charged with a string of offences including murder after bystanders stepped in and finally ended his alleged crime spree north of Brisbane.
Babos is accused of fatally striking a 78-year-old man during a number of random attacks spanning barely an hour near Bundaberg that left two others in the hospital.
It left the Childers community reeling as police launched an investigation, triggering welfare support for locals affected by the tragedy on Thursday.
"It is a pretty horrendous situation," Chief Inspector Grant Marcus told reporters.
Babos is accused of beginning his spree about 1.45pm on Wednesday.
