Qld edge NSW in Origin III, avoid sweep

Queensland have avoided a State of Origin clean sweep, beating NSW 20-18 on the Gold Coast. (AAP)

Queensland have avoided a State of Origin series whitewash, beating NSW 20-18 on the Gold Coast in Wednesday night's game three.

The Maroons, smashed in the first two games, salvaged some pride with the heart-stopping two-point win at CBUS Super Stadium.

Despite the defeat, NSW reclaim the Origin shield, taking out the series 2-1.
