Qld councils want inquiry on Logan charges

Queensland LGA chief Greg Hallam wants an independent inquiry into the Logan council charges. (AAP)

There are demands for an independent inquiry after fraud charges against seven former Queensland councillors and an ex-mayor were sensationally dropped after more than two years.

The Logan City councillors were charged by the Crime and Corruption Commission, but prosecutors officially discontinued the fraud charges at a hearing in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee was the oversight body of the CCC.

"They are actually in the process of doing their five-yearly review of the Triple C, so that review is already ongoing," she told reporters on Thursday.

But Queensland's Local Government Association says an independent inquiry "is the only satisfactory course of action".

"We raised our concerns with the CCC's parliamentary oversight committee, the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee, at the time," CEO Greg Hallam said.

"It is imperative the Premier ensures this matter is properly considered by an independent third party, such as a senior judicial figure, so the public can have confidence this will not happen again."

Former mayor Luke Smith, former deputy mayor Cherie Dalley and councillors Jennifer Breene, Russell Lutton, Phillip Pidgeon, Trevina Schwarz, Laurence Smith and Stephen Swenson all had fraud charges dismissed on Wednesday.

But Luke Smith was committed to stand trial in the District Court on two charges of misconduct in relation to public office.

The eight were all sacked from their positions, and an administrator appointed after the charges were laid by the Crime and Corruption Commission more than two years ago.

The charges related to the decision to sack former chief executive Sharon Kelsey four months after she gave information to the CCC about alleged possible misconduct by Luke Smith.
