Qdoba strips jalapeños from menus as salmonella outbreak sickens hundreds

  • Mexican fast-casual restaurants Qdoba and Chipotle removed jalapeños from their menus due to a salmonella outbreak linked to the peppers.
  • The outbreak has caused 345 reported salmonella infections across 27 states, resulting in 36 hospitalizations but no deaths.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, as the source of the outbreak.
  • Most of the reported cases are in Colorado and Minnesota, with 110 infections each, and the CDC states there is no longer an ongoing risk from the restaurants after product removal.
  • This incident occurs amid other foodborne illness outbreaks in the U.S., including a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs and a cyclospora outbreak associated with lettuce.
