QB takes a tumble, Chargers draft Rivers’ successor in Yahoo’s mock draft

The Chargers have been very active in doing their homework on the quarterbacks in this year’s class.

Many experts have a reason to believe that Los Angeles will select one as early as the first round with Missouri’s Drew Lock and Duke’s Daniel Jones being potential suitors.

For Yahoo Sport’s Eric Edholm, he sees L.A. drafting a quarterback, but it’s a player that is unlikely to fall out of the top 10. Edholm mocks former Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins to the Chargers with the No. 28 overall selection.

Here is his reasoning for the pick.

Another scenario we had no idea could materialize not long ago. And honestly, this feels like too far a drop. Ten of the past 11 first-round quarterbacks have gone to teams trading up into that spot, so if Haskins tumbles outside of the first 15 or 20 picks, you easily could see a team move up for one. The Chargers are in great shape now with Philip Rivers and Tyrod Taylor as the top two, so Haskins would be a Year 1 luxury. But could they afford to pass on Haskins at this spot? We say no.

Los Angeles has been viewed as a wild card team when it comes to potentially drafting a quarterback for a few years now. The team has obviously felt comfortable with Philip Rivers behind center, and haven’t felt obligated to select one.

But if Haskins, the No. 1 quarterback on our board, was there at the end of the first round, it would be hard to pass up on him.

The former Ohio State product is coming off of a phenomenal junior campaign in which he threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, while completing 70 percent of his passes.

Haskins only had one season as a starter under his belt. But to be able to produce those numbers against some of the top schools with very little time on the field goes to show how talented he is.

He is clearly one of the better passers in this year’s class and the potential would be too difficult to let slip even more, if he was there when L.A. is on the clock.
