QB Mitch Trubisky: Bears offense hasn’t had its breakthrough yet

After two lackluster performances to start the season, the Chicago Bears offense came alive in the second quarter of Monday’s 31-15 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Bears QB Mitch Trubisky found a rhythm early in Monday’s game, and while it wasn’t exactly last year’s Buccaneers game, it was the kind of game that Trubisky needed after a rough start to his season.

There was a collective wave of relief that seemed to radiate from coaches, fans and even Trubisky himself, although one solid performance doesn’t magically fix things.

‘‘It felt like, ‘OK, finally, here we go,’ ’’ coach Matt Nagy said of Trubisky’s second quarter, via the Sun-Times. ‘‘It’s all about confidence.’’

That confidence will be important for the entire offense, as it looks to continue to build on its best performance of the season.

Chicago’s offense put together a 21-point second quarter, which was in large part to the Bears defense forcing turnovers. But the difference in this game was that the Bears offense took advantage of their opportunities.

While the offense was clicking against a bad Redskins defense, they still have a long way to go before they’re executing at their full potential. But it’s that incremental progress that Nagy is looking for from his offense.

“We’re still growing and evolving as an offense,” Trubisky said, via the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t know if I would call it a breakthrough yet. We’ve got to keep getting better, keep going. There’s definitely room for improvement, definitely in the second half, especially on my part.”

Monday night’s performance was the confidence booster this Bears offense needs as it prepares to face a Vikings defense that’s allowing 15.7 points per game.

While the offense is unlikely to replicate a three-touchdown second-quarter performance against Minnesota, they’ll need to take advantage of opportunities they’re given if they’re going to beat the Vikings on Sunday.
