QB Marcus Mariota believes Titans are ready to ‘take the next step’ in 2019

The Tennessee Titans have finished out their past three seasons with an overall record of 9-7, and just narrowly missed the playoffs in 2018.

But starting quarterback Marcus Mariota thinks the Titans can push things further and find a higher level of success in 2019.

And he couldn’t be more ready to get back to the football field.

“The excitement, it always comes around, but I can really feel it this year,” he said in a report by Titans Online last week. “It’s fun because we have a good core group of guys that have been there since my rookie year, and we have consistently gotten better. Putting three winning seasons together is an awesome foundation. Now let’s take the next step, and I think we’re ready to do that.”

General manager Jon Robinson and the rest of the team have done a fine job preparing the Titans to do just that with their efforts in the offseason, addressing practically every one of the organization’s most pressing needs in the the first wave of free agency.

Tennessee acquired veteran defensive end Cameron Wake, guard Rodger Saffold and receiver Adam Humphries in the first wave of free agency. They also secured an insurance policy at quarterback, signing Ryan Tannehill via a trade with the Miami Dolphins to a one-year deal.

Mariota is preparing himself to stay healthy in a pivotal upcoming season, making earlier comments about “bulking up” this year, and about his steadily healing injuries.

“I am getting close to feeling a whole lot better,” he said. “It has taken a little while.”

He’s hopeful the Titans will make strides when they get back to work as the offseason program officially kicks off on April 15.

“I think we are always getting better. I think coach (Mike) Vrabel has a vision for us, and as we continue to push toward that vision I think we’ll end up where we want to be.”
