QB Jimmy Clausen to work out for Lions

The Detroit Lions have six weeks to decide whether Dan Orlovsky or Jake Rudock will be Matthew Stafford's backup.

On Monday, they'll get a look at Plan C.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen is scheduled to visit the Lions on Monday, according to NFL Network.

The Lions also are bringing in a handful of wide receivers for a workout that appears to be as much about getting their "ready list" in order as anything.

Training camp opens on Friday.

Clausen appeared in two games with the Chicago Bears and two more with the Baltimore Ravens last year, throwing for 739 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions in three starts.

He also recently worked out for Washington.

The Lions are content with their quarterback situation for now.

Stafford has not missed a game since the 2010 season and is the unquestioned starter this fall.

The team drafted Rudock in the sixth round out of Michigan this spring and intends to let him compete for the No. 2 job with Orlovsky.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn has not expressed a preference between keeping two or three quarterbacks, but the New England Patriots _ where Quinn spent the past 16 seasons _ typically keep just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.

If Rudock wins the backup job, the Lions could turn to a journeyman like Clausen (or Orlovsky, if he's still available) should something happen to Stafford during the season.
