QB Jimmy Clausen experienced delayed concussion symptoms

Aug. 31--Bears quarterback Jimmy Clausen wasn't able to practice Monday, sidelined after suffering a concussion late in Saturday night's 21-10 loss to the Bengals.

Clausen took a shot to the head from Bengals linebacker P.J. Dawson at the end of a 2-yard scramble in the fourth quarter and immediately left the game. Coach John Fox said Clausen passed the concussion test on the sideline following the hit.

But on Monday, Fox revealed that Clausen had delayed onset of symptoms and was formally diagnosed with a concussion by medical personnel on Sunday.

Clausen had a similar episode in December when he absorbed a helmet-to-helmet shot from Lions defensive end Ezekiel Ansah during the fourth quarter of a Week 16 loss. Clausen remained in that game for four more plays -- three incompletions and an interception -- and was not diagnosed with a concussion on the sideline after the series. He experienced symptoms later that night and wound up being diagnosed with a concussion.

Clausen was one of 11 Bears to miss practice Monday as the team readies for its final exhibition game.

Others sitting out Monday were: Eddie Goldman (concussion), Alshon Jeffery (calf), Eddie Royal (hip), Matt Forte (veteran's day off), Jeremiah Ratliff (ankle), Marquess Wilson (hamstring), Senorise Perry (foot), Jon Bostic (ankle), Tracy Porter (hamstring) and Sam Acho (illness).
