QB Deshaun Watson excited to work with new Texans OC Tim Kelly, QB coach Carl Smith

With the 2019 offseason ramping up towards organized team activities, things are starting to take shape between the players and coaches for the Houston Texans.

The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson had a chance to ask Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson about how excited he is to go to work with new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and quarterbacks coach Carl Smith, who were promoted and hired from outside the organization respectively this offseason.

“Yeah, I’m very excited,” Watson said. “Tim with the opportunity he has is very excited, he’s really embraced the whole OC (offensive coordinator) gig and he’s doing a great job with us.”

Kelly was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator, while Houston lured former Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Smith away to replace Sean Ryan in the same role.

“Carl has a lot of experience, has been in the NFL for a long long time, there’s a lot of stuff that he knows, that he’s seen, and is going to continue to help my knowledge and us in that quarterback room to get better,” said Watson.

Kelly’s abilities as an offensive coordinator remain relatively unknown due to his lack of experience in the NFL. However, with the work Smith notably did with Seahawks quarterback Russel Wilson, many are excited to see Watson’s progress this year.
