QB Brett Hundley will never be content just being a backup

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Brett Hundley wants to be a starting quarterback. He signed with the Cardinals knowing they had Josh Rosen and could have Kyler Murray.

He intends on competing for the job, not simply yielding it to Murray, although everyone knows Murray will be the guy.

Could he be the next version of Drew Stanton, who eventually accepted the role he has had for nearly a decade in the league.

Hundley doesn’t think he will ever get to that point.

“I’m shooting for the stars, going for a starting role,” he said on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, when he was asked if he would get to the point of accepting being a backup. “Once I get to that point, I don’t think I’ll play anymore. I don’t play to be second. I don’t play to sit back on the sidelines.”

Stanton prepared knowing he could start but knew his role. And having been in the league a decade, getting paid well to play a game and prepare to play it has its perks.

But Hundley isn’t wired that way.

“People say you’re not getting hit, you’re getting paid millions,” he said. “I don’t play the game of football for that. Money isn’t my motivation in this. It’s nice to live a nice lifestyle but that’s not what I play for.

“I think if I ever get to that point and my passion’s not in it, I’ll stop.”
