QB Brett Hundley eyeing starting job; won’t just concede job to Kyler Murray

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Brett Hundley enters his fifth NFL season. He has nine NFL starts under his belt, replacing an injured Aaron Rodgers in 2017 while with the Green Bay Packers, but he is largely seen as a backup quarterback.

That’s not how he sees himself.

And with the selection of Kyler Murray first overall in the draft, Hundley might be the only one who believes he can start for the Cardinals.

But that is what he is gunning for.

“I don’t play for second,” he said in an interview with TMZ Sports. “I think that’s my No. 1 goal is to get that starting job. It’s a competition for a reason.”

Hundley definitely respects Murray, calling him “very talented” and “very fast,” all while complimenting him as a man, saying he is “an unbelievable guy.”

That is the mentality Hindley should have. It was the approach longtime Cardinals backup Drew Stanton had and, while he always entered the season behind Carson Palmer on the depth chart, he had opportunities to start and went 9-4 in those games, as well as leading the Cardinals to a 10th game in relief of Palmer when he replaced him when the Cardinals were behind in the game.

Now, if Hundley ends up being the starter, something has gone wrong. It either means Murray has been terrible in the preseason and training camp or has gotten hurt.

But by taking this approach, Hundley will be ready if his number is called, no matter the reason.
