CHON BURI: A Qatari national and a Thai woman have been apprehended in Bang Lamung district for allegedly robbing a gold shop before making off with jewellery worth around 3 million baht.

Police and soldiers arrested Qatari Mohammed Ibrahim Ai-malki and Azizah Udomwattananon, a Thai woman, at a house in the district after tracking their car all the way from Nong Chang district in Uthai Thani where the robbery took place on Monday.

Police said 50 gold chains of various patterns had been found in their bag.

They were sent to Nong Chang police station to face theft charges. Police said the two denied the allegations.

They allegedly robbed Mae Tang Guay shop in Nong Chang on Monday. CCTV footage captured two people wearing hoods entering the shop. One, wielding a crowbar, forced the owners into the back of the shop while the other swept gold ornaments into a bag.

They made off with 188 baht-weight of gold worth more than 3 million baht, according to the police.

Chanyong Nopparat, who ran the shop, was injured by the crowbar, they added.

Police said they had managed to use CCTV footage along the escape route to track the rented Toyota Vios car all the way to Bang Lamung.
