Qatar Airways passengers must now wear face shields as well as masks in major rule change

Qatar Airways has announced that passengers must wear a face shield and mask when they travel.

The Middle East carrier says all economy passengers must wear both items during their journey - except when eating and drinking.

But the strict new measures are voluntary for business travellers - who can skip the shield "at their discretion."

The face shields, which are disposable, come in two sizes for adults and children.

Infants over the age of two years old will be required to wear one.

They are part of a hygiene kit issued to each passenger that includes hand sanitiser, gloves and a face mask.

Cabin crew will be kitted out with gloves, masks, safety glasses and disposable gowns to be worn over their uniform.

A Qatar Airways spokeswoman told CNN Travel that the shields were mandatory.

She warned reluctant travellers: "Anyone refusing to wear the face shield during the boarding process will be not allowed to travel."

It could be a common measure introduced across other airlines which only require face masks for now.

Government guidance says passengers should limit the amount of luggage they bring on board and try to social distance on planes if possible.

"By introducing these additional onboard safety and hygiene measures, our customers can rely on us and our unparalleled expertise to fly them safely to their destination," Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said in a statement.

"As the largest international airline flying consistently throughout the pandemic, we have become one of the most experienced in safety and hygiene.

"We will continue to lead the industry in terms of the services offered to our passengers, so that they can travel with confidence."
