Qantas to cut almost half of Newcastle Airport flights

REDUCTIONS: A QantasLink plane.

QantasLink flights between Newcastle and Brisbane will be reduced from 22 per week to only 12 as part of wholesale cuts to the airline's domestic network.

A Qantas spokesperson confirmed the cuts on Thursday afternoon and said the frequency of the route would be reduced from Sunday, March 29.

The Brisbane route is the only route QantasLink operates flights on out of Newcastle Airport. Eight flights are scheduled to run on the route on Friday alone.

Qantas has made drastic cuts to its domestic network, including that of JetStar which is yet to detail what routes will be impacted.

Qantas announced the majority of its 30,000 staff would be forced to take leave on Thursday morning

The future of Regional Express fights between Newcastle and Sydney is also up in the air after the airline said it would make "brutal" cuts to its network.

Newcastle Airport is expected to release a statement on Thursday afternoon.
