Q-Tip at Glastonbury 2009

Who: Q-Tip

Where and When: Jazz World stage, Friday, 10pm

Dress code: The former Tribe Called Quest frontman turned pumped-up solo performer has on a Breton cap, a puffed blouson jacket and – most importantly – long socks pulled up to the knee.

What happened: After playing his first gig in the UK for 14 years in the spring, Q-Tip came back to headline a major Glasto stage. He did the slot justice too, if not always giving a small crowd quite what they were after.

Who's watching: A number of ageing homeboys and, it seemed, a fair few other people who'd plumped for the headline act nearest to them. While the crowd reacted well to any instructions to wave their hands or go "hey, ho", not many people seemed to know Q Tip's music well.

High point: Sucka Nigga is an old Tribe track which Q Tip changed for tonight's performance into something close to a spoken word number, backed not by his live band but the legendary DJ Scratch. It was both cleverly done and booming enough for the passing trade to jump around to.

Low point: After building the crowd up to a frenzy and then calling a moment's silence for Michael Jackson, Q Tip left the stage with the crowd in the palm of his hand. He then came back out for an encore that, sadly, was so bland he lost them all over again.

In a tweet: Rap legend shows stage presence and, with backing of great band, wins new fans.
