Q&A: Didier Verhaeven

Describe what you do
I'm a fashion designer. For the last two years I have been working for Delvaux – the oldest leather goods label in the world. I am in charge of the creation of our bags and accessories.

What makes Delvaux typically Belgian?
Delvaux was born in Brussels. We've had a shop here for 120 years and the factory is also in Brussels. I think Delvaux mirrors typical Belgian style – it's avant-garde and surrealist but also very traditional and classical. Traditionally Delvaux made handbags for classically stylish women, but now we also do more cutting-edge pieces too. There used to be no culture of elegance in Belgium because the haute couture was all in Paris, and in the 60s and 70s everybody wanted Italian style. The fashion culture is all fairly new for Belgians but it's very strong – Belgian designers like Olivier Theyksens, Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester are all really big names in the industry.

Where's best for fashion in Brussels?
On Chaussée de Waterloo you'll find all the big brands like Chanel, Hermes, Vuitton and Gucci. Downtown is more avant-garde and relaxed; you'll find shops like Martin Margiela and Comme des Garcons, plus some really creative new designers who are more artisan and crafty.

Why is Flanders the place to be?
We're established in fashion, art and culture now. Lots of music scenes, like new beat in the 80s and 90s, were created here. Flanders is trendy – it has a well-known school of design, lots of famous designers, and happy people. For me, Brussels is like something between New York and Berlin. It's not beautiful but it has the contrast between old and modern, and everything is cheap so it's great for young people. Everything is possible here!
