POLICE were on Thursday preparing to hold a bedside hearing in the John Hunter Hospital after arresting a man following a police pursuit that started in Sydney's inner suburbs.
Sydney City police stopped and spoke to a man about 11.20pm on Wednesday evening as he stood beside a parked white Toyota HiAce van on Pirrama Road at Pyrmont.
Police said they were speaking to the man when the van's male driver sped away.
They began a pursuit along Pirrama Road that wound north on Darling Drive, Ultimo Road and George Street before it veered to the wrong side of Flat Rock Road in Willoughby.
Officers called off the pursuit before it was picked up again on the Pacific Highway in Chatswood.
It was abandoned a second time for safety reasons but the police helicopter tracked the van as it hit the M1 Motorway and headed north towards the Hunter.
Traffic and Highway Patrol officers at Calga punctured three of its tyres using road spikes, continuing the pursuit until the van crashed into a concrete separation roughly 500 metres from Sparks Road.
The driver, a 28-year-old man from Greenmount in Queensland, suffered face and internal injuries. He was arrested and taken to the John Hunter Hospital to receive treatment under police guard.
He has been charged with a range of offences including drive dangerously in a police pursuit, drive recklessly in a police pursuit, drive while disqualified, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and using a vehicle with an unauthorised number plate.
