Uzbekistan, in central Asia, boasts extraordinary architecture and, as a stop on the once-bustling Silk Road, fascinating history. But for nearly 30 years, former president Islam Karimov kept the country relatively closed off to foreign visitors. When he died in 2016, his successor changed course, opening Uzbekistan's doors to the outside world. Today, the government is determined to put the country on the tourist map.
