'Putrid smell' after lorry sheds its load of glass bottles on busy road

A busy road was closed in Wirral after a lorry shed its load of glass bottles.

The emergency services were called to Bolton Road in Port Sunlight at around 6.30pm last night ( Thursday) following reports of an accident.

A lorry had shed its load of glass bottles which left an oil based substance on the road.

The fire service sent three engines to the scene. Police also attended but the incident was led by Mersey Fire and Rescue.

The road was closed from around 6.30pm to 8.45pm. Locals posted comments on social media after a number of drivers became stuck in the area due to the road closure.

Some locals also complained of a strange smell in the area after the spillage.

One man said : "Lorry has dropped some bottles off the back of its load and not noticed.

"The emergency services are trying to figure out what was in the bottles as they have smashed. The contents have left quite a putrid smell in the immediate area."

A spokesperson for the fire service said to the ECHO : "We sent three fire engines to the incident which involved a number of glass bottles which had fallen from a vehicle and smashed.

"It was an oil-based substance that had spilled on the roadway.

"We handed the incident over to the local authority for clean up."

A spokesman for Wirral Council said: "It was an oil-based product, confirmed by fire service as being non-hazardous.

"Our team laid sand as per the normal protocol for liquid spillage then cleaned the area and re-sanded to further absorb any overspill."
