“Armed police” and a police helicopter have rushed to a west London train station after reports of a man with a knife on the tracks.

Severe disruption on rail services have been warned as emergency services gather at Putney station.

The British Transport Police said: “We're currently at Putney station, London, after a report of a man with a knife trespassing on the tracks.

“The situation is contained, however please be aware there is disruption to train services in the area.”

One witness reported seeing “a lot of emergency vehicles, helicopter and armed police” outside of the station, on Putney High Street.

Another witness added there was a “huge police presence” and the station had been closed.

In a statement, South Western Railway said: “We have been informed of a trespasser on the railway between Clapham Junction and Barnes.

“Network Rail staff and the Police are trying to assist the individual to a place of safety. For the safety of all those involved, power to the track has had to be switched off which means that trains are unable to run.”
