Putney election result: Labour gain London seat from Tories with huge swing

Labour has taken its first Conservative seat of the night – Putney in south west London.

Jeremy Corbyn’s party won 45.1 per cent of the vote, up 4.3 per cent, with the Tories down 8.4 to 35.7 per cent.

The seat had been a major target of Labour canvassers, and voted strongly for the remain side at the EU election.

The result contrasts with bad results for the party further north, with seats like Leigh and Darlington falling to the Tories.

Overall, Labour had a torrid night, with seat after seat falling to a sustained Tory surge in Leave voting areas.
