Putin threatens "new targets" if U.S. supplies long-range missiles to Ukraine

Russia will strike new targets if the United States sends long-range missiles to Ukraine, Vladimir Putin said on Sunday.

State of play: President Biden in an op-ed in the New York Times on Tuesday announced the plan to send new advanced rocket systems, which he said would be used to ward off Russian advances in Ukraine but wouldn't be used to launch attacks on targets in Russia.

  • "If they are supplied, we will draw appropriate conclusions from this and use our own weapons, of which we have enough, in order to strike at those facilities we are not targeting yet," Putin said during a TV interview, which was broadcast on Sunday, according to Russian state media reports.
  • "We believe that the U.S. is deliberately pouring oil on the fire," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said earlier in the week.
